The GOAT Series

This triple art frame encases a goatskin leather and tells a symbolic story: the story of an enslaved woman who was as much a part of the slave owner’s inventory as his livestock. The woman and the goat were both chained to be useful in production processes. With her forced labor and reproduction, women ensured the survival of the slavery system.

In the Maroon village there is always a place, a communion table, to communicate with the ancestors. This is done (among other things) via apinti drums. Animal skin is also used for the apinti drums. The use of goat skin in the work has both aesthetic and ethnological references.
