In a reflection on the COVID-19 pandemic, the symbolic work ‘BLACK 2023’ was created. With his installation, Deekman depicts how he is personally confronted with the exercise of power and how this has shaped him. Questions about power relations, abuse of power and fear of those in power played a major role in this. To what extent do people think they have power over another individual? and using power as a means of the power user to minimize one’s own (failure) fear, confrontation with one’s own shortcomings or threat. In the symbolic representation of his vision of what, according to Deekman, lies behind abuse of power, he hopes to contribute to the discussion on this subject.
